The Plymouth Prowler, later the Chrysler Prowler, is a retro-styled production car manufactured and marketed in 1997 and again from 1999-2002 by Chrysler/Plymouth. Based on the 1993 concept car of the same name, design influence is credited to a Chrysler-sponsored project at the Art Center College of Design. This project resulted in a thesis by Douglas "Chip" Foose that included drawings of a retro-roadster that the Prowler was modeled after.
The Plymouth Prowler was produced for the 1997 and 1999-2000 model years. After the Plymouth marque was discontinued in 2001 the Prowler was sold as a Chrysler Prowler for the 2001 and 2002 model years. Over 6 years only 11,702 Prowlers were built.
Prowlers prominently feature aluminum construction, chiefly in the chassis and engine. The body was produced in Shadyside, Ohio, and the cars were assembled by hand at the Conner Avenue Assembly Plant in Detroit, Michigan. With its front 3.5L engine and rear semi-auto trans-axle configuration it has a desirable 50/50 weight distribution. At only 2790lbs, it is quick and agile, and manually shifting its auto-stick is a lively experience.
This fine example of a 2000 Plymouth Prowler has been taylored more to the original Foose concept. It is light, fast and stealthy, and modernizes the iconic early 1930s Detroit iron.
