1939 Fords had 24-stud cylinder heads and long-awaited hydraulic brakes. They also had important design evolutions. The headlights migrated to the peaks of the front fenders, still under Ford’s handsome teardrop aerodynamic glass covers. The hood thrust forward with a low vee-shaped grille with vertical bars that suggested the bow of a fast boat cutting through waves. The wider and lower grille aided engine cooling and gave the designers the latitude to eliminate the hood side vents.
The 1939 Ford DeLuxe Convertible Coupe presented here finished in black was treated to a high quality, body-off restoration done adhering to original specifications. It comes out of a prestigious So. Cal Ford/Mercury collection, and belonged to an extremely knowledgeable collector. The restored bright work and trim remains fresh in appearance, along with new glass that displays the correct “Ford” script throughout. Exterior options include a pair of dual side view mirrors, draft deflectors and a locking gasoline cap. The handsome car also features an outstanding tan convertible top with matching tonneau cover, a rumble seat, artillery style wheels, chrome DeLuxe wheel covers and wide whitewall tires.
The beautifully restored rich burgundy leather interior has rubber floor mats and a restored dash panel. Interior amenities include a radio, clock, heater and defroster. The under hood area has not been neglected, with a fully restored, period correct engine and bay. Similarly, the undercarriage is detailed and totally period correct in presentation. It remains in show worthy condition throughout and drives wonderfully. A 1939 Ford Convertible such as this is an excellent addition to any collection.
