Donald Healey’s four-cylinder Healey Hundred was a sensation at the 1952 London Motor Show, impressing Austin’s Leonard Lord, who promptly put it into production as the Austin-Healey. Successively upgraded, it received six-cylinder power in 1956, but it was the three-liter 3000 Mark III of 1964-1968 that became the archetypal “Big Healey.”
Completed on June 1, 1964 and dispatched from the works two days later, this 3000 Mark III convertible was built to left-hand drive North American specification and consigned to Donald Healey & Company in Warwick, UK. As supplied, it was painted in Colorado Red, with red upholstery and a black convertible top. Options included the adjustable steering column, black tonneau cover, a heater and electric overdrive.
A former owner had it restored by the Rolls-Royce dealer in New York. Within the last three years, the current owner has upgraded and detailed it, changing to a negative-ground electrical system and installing solid state electronic components like a fuel pump, MSD ignition and an automatic pre-lube system. when the motor was redone it was done so that it could properly use unleaded fuel. A new top was fitted in tan Stayfast, and the trunk was lined in carpet matching the interior. An Optima battery is installed, and the factory tool kit is with the car. The original black top and tonneau cover were retained and are in good condition. The mileage shows as 38,000, believed to be correct and original to the car.The car is immaculate, inside and out. It is as clean underneath as on top, and the engine compartment is sanitary and well detailed. White side coves provide a nice accent to the red body, nicely set off with chrome wire wheels. First in Class at the June 2010 CP of Colorado Concours d’Elegance, it is offered with a Heritage Certificate verifying that it is numbers matching. Big Healeys are addictive. The low moan of a straight six and spirited motoring just inches off the ground give a rush to drivers of all ages.
