While tightening emissions regulations, rising insurance premiums, unleaded fuels and activist politicians conspired to strangle the American muscle car out of existence, Oldsmobile held the line with its sophisticated but brutally quick 442. Only available with 455 cubic inch V8 power for 1971, the 442 continued to benefit from “Dr. Oldsmobile’s” therapy with its unrivalled performance, refinement and image.
The handsome styling of 1970 was essentially unchanged, and standard features included Strato-Bucket seats, special emblems and a deluxe steering wheel, while standard performance equipment included dual exhaust, heavy-duty wheels and special springs, stabilizer bars and engine mounts. The standard transmission was a three-speed manual unit, with a Turbo Hydra-Matic 400 automatic and a four-speed manual optional. The few 1971 442s equipped with a four-speed manual transmission also received a lower 3.42:1 rear axle ratio, improving acceleration.
This 1971 442 Convertible received a ground-up restoration and has travelled just 169 miles since. This is a fully numbers matching car. The restoration was performed by one of most well respected restorers of 442's. The hungry 455 V8 is fed by the W-25 Force-Air induction system, and power is handled by a very rare four-speed manual transmission, while rolling stock consists of Super Stock I wheels and period-style Firestone Wide Oval tires. Other features include an AM/FM radio, a floor console, power brakes, power steering, power windows and a power-operated convertible top, while the trunk area is complete with a jack, a spare tire and a lug wrench. The 442 has excellent and straight bodywork with good panel fit and excellent brightwork, as well as a properly detailed and equipped engine bay. Offered complete with an original owner’s manual, original production build sheet this rare and highly equipped 442 convertible represents the height of refined performance at the close of the muscle car era. One of only 1,304 convertibles built for 1971, it is particularly rare, especially in this desirable Matador red finish. This is an original Matador Red car and not a color change. The car is highly detailed throuout with correct factory chalk marks and is ready to be shown or to simple be driven and enjoyed. One of the finest 1971 442 Convertibles available.
