Introduced in 1976, the Jaguar XJ-S replaced the iconic Jaguar E-type. This radical new design signified a notable departure in style from the historic E-Type and was surprisingly available initially as a coupe only. North American demand for an open-roof SL-alternative caused Jaguar released a “cabriolet” version in 1983 with a targa-style top, but still lacked a true convertible variant.

Prominent US coachbuilder Hess & Eisenhardt had been established since 1876, and therefore the ideal firm entrusted to create and fully-engineer a true XJS convertible for Jaguar in 1986. This was no small task since special considerations were made to construct and reinforce the chassis for duty as a safe and luxurious roadster. Even special counterweights were added inside front corners to balance harmonic resonance from the convertible’s significant modifications. These unique vehicles were produced from 1986 to 1988 until Jaguar eventually began producing its own convertible version of the XJS by 1989.
